Het uit Greensboro, North Carolina afkomstige Between The Buried And Me heeft hun naam afgeleid van de tekst van het Counting Crows nummer “Ghost Train”. Vorig jaar kwam de nieuwe plaat, The Great Misdirect, uit. Om deze nu ook in Europa te promoten touren ze met Lamb of God, Job for a Cowboy en August Burns Red. Tijdens deze tour doen ze Nederland eenmalig aan, ze staan als openingsact in de Amsterdamse Melkweg. Voor aanvang van de show spreek ik bassist Dan Briggs over deze nieuwe plaat, touren in Europa en zijn invloeden.
Als Dan mij ziet terwijl ik op hem sta te wachten, begint hij spontaan m’n naam te zingen. Ik heet hem welkom in Amsterdam op de middag van hun tweede Nederlandse show ooit. Als ik hem aan de eerste herinner weet hij direct dat dat die rare show was in Tilburg. Toen moesten ze vanwege het EK voetbal ’s middags spelen en werd hun show zelfs ingekort. Terugkijkend zegt hij dat ze vlak daarvoor een aantal shows met The Dillinger Escape Plan speelden in Duitsland, maar daar kende bijna niemand de band. Ze waren blij met de show in de 013, want daar kende het publiek hun wel.
Voor een band als Between the Buried and Me is het vrij logisch om te vragen waarom de band zo weinig in Europa komt: “I guess it just took us a long time to get to Europe. I don’t know why it took that long, i think we just want to get established in the States first of all. But we’re hitting a lot of places for the first time on this tour. Places like Japan.”
Nu is de band dus op tour met onder andere Lamb of God, maar wat komt daarna? Dan: “Right after this tour wraps up, we’re going home for two weeks and then we’re going to tour with Mastodon and Baroness in the states. And we’re going to Europe in june. I don’t know what kind of shows, actually. I hope some festivals and clubshows.”
“I hope that after the new year we’re getting back to do a headline show. We all want to do that, we have more fun doing that. And for the people in Europe, they’ve never get to see us that long, only an 30 minute set. So we want to come over and play a longer set. Tonight we play three songs, but in the UK we only got a 20 minute slot, so we only played our last song of our last album, because it’s so long.”
De muziek van Between the Buried and Me groeit per album. Als je kijkt naar de sound op The Silent Circus en dat vergelijkt met Alaska, Colors, de live versie van Colors en nu met The Great Misdirect, dan voelt dit aan als een muzikale evolutie. Volgens Dan zit dit in hun natuur. Volgens hem willen ze niet alleen groeien en de vorige plaat verbeteren, maar ook proberen om iets compleet nieuws neer te zetten. Sinds Colors gaat het wel op een meer natuurlijke wijze om de hele plaat vol te maken, het ging vanzelf.
The Great Misdirect is al een tijdje uit en voelt als een conceptplaat, wat is het concept? Dan: “The concept is no concept. Colors is more of a conceptual piece, musically, wich is very cool. The Great Misdirect flows well, but there are seperate ideas. We wrote Mirrors and Obfuscations as one piece. Actually, the album is all in the order that we wrote, so that’s very cool. With Colors, we started in the middle, went to the end and then went to beginning. And we knew we wanted to end this album with a monster of a song, and we did with Swim to the Moon.”
“Obfuscation is where the album name, The Great Misdirect, comes from. Tommy wrote it about the different ways your brain interprates information that it’s given and how you’re not fully able to comprehend everything that is going into it. So it’s about the great misdirection of the brain.”
“Recording the album was great. We had more time for finetuning things before we started mixing, so that made it very easy. And I got to mess around with a fretless bass. The music evolved, we evolved as players. And man, I need to get fretless bass, they’re awesome.”
Between the Buried and Me is zo’n band die met veel acts kan touren vanwege de brede sound. Maar door wie is Dan beinvloed? Hij noemt Kurt Cobain en Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Dream Theater en King Crimsom. Vooral qua sound vind hij Dream Theater en King Crimson heel erg vet. Hij wordt vooral beinvloed door andere muzikanten, maar ook geluiden die hij hoort als hij bijvoorbeeld door het bos loopt.
Hij vind het best apart om te touren in Europa, zo kan hij z’n telefoon niet gebruiken. Daar staat tegenover dat hij eindelijk weer eens bezig kan met z’n email. Maar het is wel heel erg vet, want alle landen in Europa hebben zo weer z’n andere gebruiken, hij noemt het een groot avontuur. Als afsluiter wil ik natuurlijk z’n schoonmaat weten: “I can tell you a bunch of different things. In Europe it’s 42, and in the States an 8½. So yeah, I have small feet.”
