Soilwork

De populaire melodische Gothenburg metal band Soilwork brengt dit jaar eindelijk hun nieuwe album The Panic Broadcast (met een mooie getekende hoes) uit. Nadat het vorige album Sworn To A Great Divide een beetje een slappe en voorspelbare tegenvaller was wisselde de line-up van de band een beetje. Bandlid van het eerste uur Peter Wichers keerde terug en iedereen was gelijk weer benieuwd naar het nieuwe werk. Reden genoeg voor ROAR E-Zine om contact te leggen met de charismatische frontman Björn “Speed” Strid.

Ondanks de drukke tijd rondom de promotionele werkzaamheden die nu eenmaal gepaard gaan met het uitbrengen van een nieuw album vergaat het hem goed. “I’m good thanx, currently in Toronto, taking a little vacation and also doing some interviews ; )” Tussen het nieuwe album en vorige wisselden beide gitaristen. Waarom werkte het niet tussen de bandleden? “Well the band has been around for quite sometime and people change, find other priorities and some people you just can’t with anymore like for example with Ola Frenning (de gitarist die in 2008 na tien jaar Soilwork verliet en werd vervangen door Sylvain Coudret van Scarve). We came to a point where we could work with him anymore and we felt he spreading a lot negative energy and didn’t have the same visions musically as the rest of the members. Now that Peter is back, it really is close to the original line up and really feels like Soilwork for real again, i’m excited! Me and Peter started the band and even though the previous album without him was a nice challenge I really did miss him and it felt like there was something missing. I really love writing sngs with him!” Drummer Dirk Verbeuren zit dan wel al een tijdje bij de band maar speelt ook in Scarve en Aborted. Is dat een probleem voor Soilwork? “Not really, his main band is Soilwork and he’s only doing stuff with those bands wen he has time off.”

Peter Wichers heeft ook een productietaak op The Panic Broadcast. Hoe was het voor hem om tegelijk gitaar te spelen en het album te produceren? “I think Peter did really good! It must have been a big pressure to return to the band having to deliver good songs and then having to be in charge of the production as well. I felt really comfortable doing my vocals with him and the rest of the guys felt great about it too! He managed to get a really organic sound that Jens Bogren (mixing) later mixed together beautifully!”

De band werkte op het voorgaande album met legende Devin Townsed. Hoe heeft de band hem weten te strikken? “We really like each others music so it wasn’t really a problem. It was a great time recording my vocals yet again with him for the previous album. I just feel that he’s a very inspirational person and he really makes me feel relaxed. He’s really open to music and really focus on the presence and the performance, he’s also a very hilarious man that will put a smile on your face everyday, love him!” Helaas was de beste man vanwege zijn drukke tourschema niet in staat opnieuw achter de knoppen te drukken. “I think we worked it out really good ourselves.”Ik ben erg benieuwd naar hoe de wijzigingen in de band het schrijven van het album hebben beïnvloed. “We talked about not having any boundaries whatsoever and be playful about the next album, that was really the mindset. It became almost like a reaction to our previous album since that one was more straight up verse to chorus oriented. We really wanted every member to go apeshit on this album and not being held back, i think that’s the most beautiful thing about this album. The level of playing is insane for sure!”

Volgens de promo die we van het label over het nieuwe album kregen zou The Panic Broadcast the heaviest but still most melodic ever zijn. Is dit niet iets dat elke band over hun album zegt? “It really is! It has the most presence of all our albums. As I said before, it’s very playful, very progressive. I also feel that the melodic parts are more smart and unpredictable than before and when the intensity explodes it REALLY explodes. A lot of surprises but also a lot of references to the Natural Born Chaos days!” Altijd leuk om te vragen is wat de albumtitel betekent. Veel bands laten dit expres open voor interpretatie maar Björn vertelt het graag. “Since this album has been away for me, with the help of Peter to open up and channel the panic anxiety i’ve been going through in my life, it felt like a natural choice to name the album “The Panic Broadcast”. I feel a lot stronger after realizing this album and it feels so real and has so much presence which i believe the title also has.”

Op het vorige album stond het nummer ‘Exile’, dat als single gepaard met een (behoorlijk saaie) videoclip werd uitgebracht. Zijn er plannen voor een nieuwe clip? “Yes, i think the word right now is to record a video for the second track ‘Two lives worth of reckoning’, it might be an animated video actually.” Zijn video’s tegenwoordig nog wel relevant? “In a way, the only place I feel people are watching vids is on Youtube, all those TV channels are gone unfortunately.”

Welke tours staan er gepland om The Panic Broadcast te promoten? “We will start with a headline tour in North America right when the album comes out. The plan is to return to do a European tour in october/november and then do Japan/Australia and maybe South America.” De band heft hiervoor enkele packagetours gedaan. Staan die nog op de planning? “Not sure how i feel about the package deal, maybe if there’s any interesting coming up.”

De band slaat Nederland zelden over tijdens hun tours. Heeft Soilwork een speciale band met ons kikkerlandje? “For sure, I mean that’s where we started to tour back in 1998, doing weekend shows, we have definitely built up a solid and loyal fanbase there!” Ben ik nog iets vergeten? “Well, I really wanna express how proud i am about this album, it feels so real to me and I hope people will feel that too!”

The Panic Broadcast van Soilwork is hun achtste studioalbum en komt via Nuclear Blast op 2 juli uit.
